Anise hyssop: when to prune it?
In late March or April, when you see new shoots at the base. Not in autumn.
Anise hyssop: how to prune it?
- Cut the old stems back to just above the new shoots at the base.
- Remove dead and weak stems completely.
- Feel free to cut stems for tea or a bouquet in summer; it does the plant no harm.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March–April.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Anise hyssop flowers in July–September, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If you only cut back in March–April, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Do not prune in autumn: the old stems protect the plant against wet, cold winters.
