Apple mint: when to prune it?
In March cut away the old stems; during the growing season pinch out the tips regularly, and after flowering in July–August you can cut everything back to 5–10 cm.
Apple mint: how to prune it?
- In March cut last year’s dead stems to just above the ground.
- During the season cut the tips just above a pair of leaves; it then branches and produces new leaves.
- In July–August, after flowering, cut the stems back to 5–10 cm: this gives a fresh new crop.
- Keep runners that grow outside the pot or bed short.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Apple mint flowers in July–September, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: For a bee-friendly plant, leave a few stems to flower for the insects, but cut the rest back.
