Costmary: when to prune it?
Late February to March, before new shoots start to grow.
What else to prune in those months? March
Costmary: how to prune it?
- Cut last year’s dead stems down to just above the ground.
- Remove faded flower stems during the season if you want a neat clump.
- Take out old, woody or dead parts at the base and cut away runners that stray too far.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
