Belladonna lily: when to prune it?
Pruning in the usual sense is not needed. Cut off the faded flower stems in November and clear the withered leaves in June.
Belladonna lily: how to prune it?
- After flowering, cut the flower stem off just above the bulb, wearing gloves.
- Leave the green leaves through winter and spring: they allow the bulb to build up reserves for the next flowering.
- Only pull the leaves away once they are completely yellow and dry, usually in June.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: June and November. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Wear gloves: all parts are poisonous and the sap can irritate the skin.
