Bloody dock: when to prune it?
In June–July: cut off the flower stems as soon as they appear and cut the plant back if needed for new leaves.
Bloody dock: how to prune it?
- Cut flower stems off at the base, before the flowers open.
- After a heavy harvest, cut all the leaves back to 5 cm above the ground; fresh, tender leaves regrow.
- Remove yellowed or damaged leaves throughout the season.
- In February–March, clear away last year’s dead leaves.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: June–July.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: If you leave the seed stems, bloody dock seeds itself freely. Cut them off before the seed ripens. Sorrel contains oxalic acid: eat it in moderation.
