Blue grama: when to prune it?
Cut back at the end of March or in April, before new growth starts; leave the spikes standing all winter.
Blue grama: how to prune it?
- Cut the whole tuft down to about 5 cm above the ground with shears or a hedge trimmer.
- Rake away the old leaves so that light and warmth reach the centre.
- Do not cut back in autumn: the old tuft protects the centre in winter.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March–April.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March–April, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: It starts into growth late, often in May when the soil is warm: be patient.
