Canadian fleabane: when to prune it?
In July–August, before the seed is ripe.
Canadian fleabane: how to prune it?
- Pull up the whole plant, root and all; cutting it off works less well, as it often regrows with side shoots.
- If pulling is impossible, cut off the spray before it turns fluffy and put it straight into a bag.
- If you leave a few plants for insects, cut off the sprays as soon as flowering is over.
- Mow rough areas in summer, before the heads turn to fluff.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July–August.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Do not wait until the spray is white and fluffy: the seed then flies off at the slightest touch.
