China pink: when to prune it?

No real pruning is needed. From June to September you deadhead, and in July you can cut back lightly after the first flush of flowers.

What else to prune in those months? July

China pink: how to prune it?

  1. Remove faded flowers with their stalks, down to just above the next leaf or side bud.
  2. If the plant looks untidy in July, cut all stems back by a third and give some feed: it flowers again after a few weeks.
  3. Feel free to pick flowers for a small vase: it works as a light trim.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: July.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • China pink flowers in June–September, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
  • If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.

Caution: China pink is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
