Carthusian pink: when to prune it?
After the main flowering, in August, and in March to clear away the old stems.
Carthusian pink: how to prune it?
- In August cut faded stems back to just above the leaf tuft; leave a few if you want seedlings.
- In March cut away the old, dry stems, but leave the green tuft of leaves.
- Never cut into the green leaves at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Carthusian pink flowers in June–August, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
