Southernwood: when and how to prune
Artemisia abrotanum
Southernwood is best pruned in April and June.

Southernwood: when to prune it?
In April, as soon as you see new green buds low down on the stems. A light trim is still fine in June; after the end of August, do not prune.
Southernwood: how to prune it?
- Cut all stems back to 20–30 cm above the ground, just above a few young buds.
- This keeps the plant compact and bushy; without pruning it becomes open and falls apart.
- Remove dead and frost-damaged stems right at the base.
- In June, just trim the tips to keep it in shape; the clippings can be dried.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: April and June. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Do not prune in autumn: young shoots that still appear then are killed by frost in winter, and the old stems protect the base.
