Damask rose: when to prune it?
Prune lightly straight after flowering, in July, and thin out old stems in March.
Damask rose: how to prune it?
- After flowering: cut the faded shoots back lightly, by about a third, and remove dead or weak stems.
- In March: every few years remove a few of the oldest stems at the base.
- Shorten last year’s side shoots to 2–4 buds; the flowers are borne on these side shoots.
- Leave young, vigorous shoots: they take over from the old stems.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March and July can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Damask rose flowers in June–July, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Do not prune too hard in spring: the flowers are borne on last year’s side shoots, so severe pruning costs you blooms.
