Wild angelica: when to prune it?
Remove the old stems in March; mow a wet hay meadow in October.
Wild angelica: how to prune it?
- Leave the faded umbels and hollow stems standing all winter.
- In March, cut the old stems off at the base.
- Tie the cut hollow stems into bundles or stack them in a pile: insects overwintering inside can still crawl out.
- Mow a wet hay meadow in October, once the seeds are ripe, and remove the cuttings.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and October. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Wear gloves and long sleeves: in combination with sunlight, the sap can irritate the skin.
