Armand clematis: when to prune it?

At most a light trim, straight after flowering in April–May, because it flowers on last year’s wood.

What else to prune in those months? April · May

Armand clematis: how to prune it?

  1. Shorten flowered stems that are too long to keep them within the space you allow.
  2. Remove dead stems and the mass of brown leaves inside the plant.
  3. Better a little every year than a hard cut now and then: it does not respond well to hard pruning.
  4. After pruning, tie in the new shoots fanned out.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: April–May.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • Pruning in April–May can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
  • Armand clematis flowers in March–April, when it attracts bees.
  • If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
  • Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.

Common mistakes

  • Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.

Caution: If you prune in summer, autumn or winter, you cut off next spring’s flowers. Armand clematis is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
