Field horsetail: when to prune it?
From March to September, whenever new stems appear.
What else to prune in those months? March · April · May · June · July · August · September
Field horsetail: how to prune it?
- In March–April, remove the brown spore stems before the spores are released.
- Pull or cut the green stems at ground level; they snap easily at the joints.
- On a verge or lawn, mowing will not make it disappear, but it does keep it low.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March–September.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not put rhizomes on the compost heap: every fragment can sprout again.
