Water horsetail: when to prune it?
In March, before the new stems appear. Thinning is done in September–October.
What else to prune in those months? March
Water horsetail: how to prune it?
- Cut the old brown stems just above the water or the ground.
- Leave them standing in winter: the stems and dense clumps shelter small animals.
- Lift the cuttings out of the water, so they do not rot and make the pond richer in nutrients.
- To slow it down, pull out stems and rhizomes beyond where you want it in summer.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Leave removed stems and rhizomes on the bank for a day, so small water creatures can crawl back into the pond.
