Winterberry (Ilex verticillata): when to prune it?
Prune lightly in March, before growth starts. In December you can cut berried branches for Christmas.
Winterberry (Ilex verticillata): how to prune it?
- Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches.
- Every few years, take out one or two of the oldest stems at the base to encourage young shoots.
- Cut stems for the vase just above a side shoot or bud, spread over the whole shrub.
- Do not prune hard: the more you cut, the fewer berries.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and December. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) flowers in June, when it attracts bees.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: A male plant bears no berries; you can prune it a little harder, as long as it still flowers every year. Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
