Holly-leaved sweetspire (Itea ilicifolia): when to prune it?
In April, when you can see which branches were damaged by frost. Wall-trained shrubs can be trimmed lightly again after flowering, in September.
Holly-leaved sweetspire (Itea ilicifolia): how to prune it?
- Cut frozen or dead branches back to healthy, green wood.
- Remove crossing or overcrowded branches to let light into the shrub.
- For a wall shrub: remove branches growing away from the wall and tie in the rest.
- Do not prune too hard in one go; spread a heavy pruning over two years.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: April and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in April can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Holly-leaved sweetspire (Itea ilicifolia) flowers in July–August, when it attracts bees.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Do not prune in late autumn or winter: young shoots that sprout after pruning are easily killed by frost.
