Jewel orchid: when to prune it?
A jewel orchid is hardly pruned. Cut off the flower spikes after flowering and shorten long, bare stems in March–April.
Jewel orchid: how to prune it?
- Cut spent flower spikes right off with clean scissors as soon as the flowers have faded.
- Shorten long, bare stems to just above a node with a leaf or a root; new shoots grow from the nodes.
- Use the cut pieces of stem with 2–3 nodes as cuttings.
- Remove withered or yellow leaves.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March–April.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.
