Water avens: when to prune it?
After flowering, at the end of June, cut away the spent stems. In March, tidy away old, damaged leaves.
Water avens: how to prune it?
- After flowering, cut the flower stems back to just above the leaf rosette.
- If the leaves look tired or spotty in summer, cut them back: fresh leaves will follow.
- In March, cut away dead and brown leaves so the new rosette gets light.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and June. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Water avens flowers in April–June, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: If you leave the seed heads, it self-seeds and readily crosses with wood avens. If you do not want that, cut them off in time.
