Chilean avens: when to prune it?
It is not really pruned: remove old leaves in March, and cut off faded stems during and after flowering.
Chilean avens: how to prune it?
- In March, cut away damaged and brown leaves at the base; leave the healthy evergreen leaves.
- From May to August, cut faded flower stems back to the foliage.
- In August, after the last flowers, remove all flower stems; a small second flush sometimes follows.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Chilean avens flowers in May–August, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
