Giant rhubarb: when to prune it?
It is not really pruned. In November, after the first frost, cut off the dead leaves and use them to protect the crown.
What else to prune in those months? November
Giant rhubarb: how to prune it?
- Cut the leaves off at the base after the first night frost.
- Turn them upside down over the buds like a roof and cover with straw or dry leaves.
- In April, clear away the remains of the old leaves as the new buds start to grow.
- Torn or withered leaves can simply be cut off in summer.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: November.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Wear sturdy gloves and long sleeves: the leaf stalks and the undersides of the leaves are covered in prickles.
