Early-purple orchid: when to prune it?
No pruning, just mowing: from mid-July, once the seeds have blown out of the capsules.
What else to prune in those months? July
Early-purple orchid: how to prune it?
- Do not cut off spent flower stems: leave them until the capsules turn brown and split open.
- Mow the grassland or woodland edge around the plants from mid-July and remove the cuttings, so the soil stays poor.
- Let the leaves turn yellow and wither by themselves; this happens in June–July.
- Thin out shrubs and trees above the plants in winter, so enough light reaches the woodland floor in spring.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Never mow during growth and flowering, from late winter to mid-July: the plant needs its leaves to fill its new tuber.
