Lesser pond-sedge: when and how to prune
Carex acutiformis
Lesser pond-sedge is best pruned in March.
| Pruning months | March |

| Flowering | May–June |
| Native to Belgium | Yes |
Lesser pond-sedge: when to prune it?
Late February to late March, before new leaves appear.
What else to prune in those months? March
Lesser pond-sedge: how to prune it?
- Cut or mow the dead leaves down to 10–15 cm above the ground or water.
- Remove the cut leaves from the pond so the water is not enriched.
- In a large stand, leave a section uncut each time: insects overwinter there.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not mow or cut between April and July: birds nest in the dense vegetation then.
