| Flowering | April–June |
| Native to Belgium | Yes |
Greater pond-sedge: when to prune it?
Late February to late March, before new shoots appear.
What else to prune in those months? March
Greater pond-sedge: how to prune it?
- Cut or mow the dead leaves down to 10–15 cm above the ground or water.
- Remove the cut leaves from the pond.
- In large stands leave a section standing each time, so insects and birds keep their cover.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not mow or cut from April to July: birds nest in the dense vegetation then.
