What else to prune in those months? January · February · July · August · November · December
Turkey oak: how to prune it?
- Prune mainly when young to form a strong crown; little after that.
- On a young tree, choose a single leader and gradually remove competing leaders and branches that hang too low.
- Cut large branches in three steps, just outside the branch collar.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July–August and November–February. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in July–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Do you see nests of the oak processionary moth? Don’t prune yourself but have them removed by a professional.
