Easter cactus: when to prune it?

After flowering, in May–June, if you want to shape the plant or make it bushier.

What else to prune in those months? May · June

Easter cactus: how to prune it?

  1. Twist off overlong or lopsided stems at a joint with a gentle turn; no knife is needed.
  2. Remove a few segments per stem: it will branch there and give more flowers next year.
  3. Use the twisted-off segments as cuttings.
  4. Remove shrivelled or damaged segments.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: May–June.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.

Caution: Do not prune in autumn or winter: that is when the buds form at the tips of the segments.
