Rampion bellflower: when to prune it?
After the seed has ripened, in September–October.
Rampion bellflower: how to prune it?
- Leave the spent stems until the seed is ripe.
- Shake the capsules over the spot where you want new plants, or leave it to the wind.
- Then cut the dead stem at ground level: the plant itself dies after flowering.
- Feel free to leave a few stems standing until spring: they shelter small insects.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: September–October.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not mow over the plants in June–August: the flowering stems would disappear before setting seed.
