Grey moor grass: when to prune it?
In March, before the flower spikes appear.
What else to prune in those months? March
Grey moor grass: how to prune it?
- Remove the dead, brown leaves from the clump with your (gloved) fingers or a small rake.
- Trim off only the old, withered leaves; leave the green ones.
- The trimmings can go on the compost heap.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Never cut the clump right down: the evergreen foliage is its beauty and its winter protection.
