Stipa capillata: when to prune it?
In March, before the new shoots start to grow.
What else to prune in those months? March
Stipa capillata: how to prune it?
- Comb the dead leaves out of the clump with your (gloved) fingers, or trim them off.
- Cut the withered flower stems to about 10 cm above the ground.
- Do not cut into the heart of the clump: it recovers slowly.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Wear gloves: the seeds have a sharp point that can prick the skin.
