European feather grass: when to prune it?
Do not cut it short: comb out dead leaves in March and cut away spent flower stems in August.
European feather grass: how to prune it?
- Comb the dead leaves out of the clump with spread, gloved fingers.
- Only trim brown leaf tips; leave the green heart.
- In August, cut the old flower stems off at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Do not cut feather grass down to the ground: it recovers poorly.
