Tree mallow: when to prune it?
In April, when the new buds are visible and the hardest frosts are over.
What else to prune in those months? April
Tree mallow: how to prune it?
- Cut all branches back to about 30 cm above the ground, just above a healthy bud.
- Remove dead or frost-damaged branches completely.
- On white-pink selections such as ‘Barnsley’, branches with deep pink flowers may appear: cut them out at the base.
- After pruning, give compost and a layer of mulch.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: April.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in April can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Tree mallow flowers in June–October, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Do not prune hard in autumn: the old branches protect the base from frost, and early pruning gives soft shoots that can freeze.
