Hollyhock mallow: when to prune it?
In March cut away the old stems; in May you can shorten the stems for a lower, sturdier plant.
Hollyhock mallow: how to prune it?
- In March, cut all of last year’s dead stems down to just above the ground.
- In May, shorten the stems by a third if you want a sturdier, lower plant; it will then flower a little later.
- Remove faded flowers regularly to prolong flowering.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and May. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Hollyhock mallow flowers in June–September, when it attracts bees.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
