Amphibious bistort: when to prune it?
Real pruning is not needed. In July–August shorten stems that spread too far, and in October remove the dying leaves.
Amphibious bistort: how to prune it?
- Cut overlong stems off at the edge of the basket, or gently pull them out with their roots.
- Leave enough floating leaves: plants covering a third to half of the water surface is good for a healthy pond.
- In October remove yellow and brown leaves with a pond rake or scissors, without pulling up the rhizome.
- Leave whatever you take out of the water on the bank for a day, so small creatures can crawl back into the pond.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July–August and October. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Amphibious bistort flowers in June–September, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: It grows fast and roots wherever a stem touches the bottom: in a small pond always plant it in a basket.
