Fennel: how to prune it?

  1. Cut the umbels when the seed turns greyish brown, and let them finish drying in a paper bag.
  2. Leave some stems standing over winter as shelter for insects.
  3. In March, remove the old stems just above the new shoots at the base.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.

Caution: Don’t cut back or harvest in summer if there are swallowtail caterpillars on the plant.
