Lady’s-slipper: when to prune it?
In October, once the leaves are completely yellow and withered.
What else to prune in those months? October
Lady’s-slipper: how to prune it?
- Cut the withered stems off just above the ground, or gently pull them away if they come loose by themselves.
- Leave green leaves until they die off naturally: the plant draws its reserves for next year from them.
- Remove the dead leaves, as slugs and fungi like to overwinter in them.
- After flowering, cut off the faded flower if you do not want seed to ripen.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: October.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Never cut green leaves in summer: it weakens the plant and can cost you next year’s flowers.
