St Lucie cherry: when to prune it?
In summer, in dry weather (June–August).
Prune cherries and their relatives in summer, in dry weather. Wounds made in autumn and winter risk silver leaf and bacterial canker.
St Lucie cherry: how to prune it?
- Little pruning needed: remove dead, diseased and crossing branches and otherwise let the shrub grow freely.
- Wounds in autumn and winter invite gummosis; in summer, in dry weather, they heal faster.
- To keep it smaller, regularly remove an old branch rather than cutting everything back at once.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: June–August.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in June–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Pruning in autumn or winter: the wounds then let in silver leaf and gummosis.
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Don’t prune in wet weather or in autumn or winter: disease can then enter the wounds, as in all cherries.
