French lavender and rose petal pot-pourri

  • Makes: 1 bowl
  • Time: 20 min + 2 weeks drying and maturing
  • From: French lavender

Ingredients

  • 2 small handfuls of dried French lavender heads, with their flags
  • 2 small handfuls of dried rose petals or rosebuds
  • 1 small handful of dried rosemary, sage or lemon balm leaves
  • a few dried orange or lemon slices (optional)
  • 1 large jar with a lid and an open bowl

Method

  1. Let all the flowers and leaves dry completely: anything still soft will go mouldy.
  2. Mix them gently in the jar so the heads stay whole. Close the jar and leave it somewhere dark for 2 weeks; shake it now and then so the scents blend.
  3. Arrange the pot-pourri in an open bowl, with the best heads and slices on top. Keep the bowl out of full sun so the colours do not fade.
  4. Run your hand through it now and then, or crush a few heads to refresh the scent.

Storing: In an open bowl it stays fragrant for a few months; in a closed jar, for a year. Throw it away when it gets dusty or smells musty.
