Sloe gin
- Makes: ± 1 litre
- Time: 20 min + 3 months steeping
- From: Blackthorn
Ingredients
- 500 g sloes (after frost or frozen)
- 250 g sugar
- 700 ml gin or jenever
Method
- Rinse the sloes and remove the stalks. If they have not been frozen yet, put them in the freezer overnight: the skins split and there is no need to prick them.
- Put the sloes and sugar in a large, clean jar.
- Pour in the gin or jenever and close the jar.
- Shake daily for the first week until the sugar has dissolved, then weekly; keep the jar in the dark.
- After 3 months, strain through a cloth and bottle. Traditionally it is ready just in time for Christmas.
Storing: Keeps for years in a cool, dark place; the flavour rounds out with time. Not for children.
