Balsam poplar: when to prune it?
In July–August, when the tree is in leaf and wounds close quickly. Avoid spring, when the sap is rising.
Balsam poplar: how to prune it?
- Young tree: choose one central leader and remove competing tops.
- Raise the crown gradually: remove a few of the lowest side branches each time, never more than a quarter of the crown in one year.
- Remove dead, broken and rubbing branches just outside the branch collar, without leaving a stub.
- Leave large, old trees to a qualified tree surgeon.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July–August.
- Never remove more than about a quarter of the crown at once. Better a little every year.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in July–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Large pruning wounds heal poorly and let in rot and canker. Prune a little and often rather than a lot and rarely, and never top the tree.
