Black poplar: when to prune it?

Prune while dormant, from November to March, but not in freezing weather.
What else to prune in those months? January · February · July · August · November · December
Black poplar: how to prune it?
- Little pruning needed. Give a young tree a single leader and remove crossing branches.
- Have old trees along roads and paths checked regularly for falling branches.
- Saw off heavy branches in two stages: first a little further out, then close to the trunk, so that the bark doesn’t tear.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July–August and November–February. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in July–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Hard pruning triggers lots of epicormic shoots on the trunk.
