Hybrid black poplar: when to prune it?

Dead, diseased and broken branches can be removed at any time of year. Formative pruning or crown lifting in winter or summer.

Prune while dormant, from November to March, but not in freezing weather.

What else to prune in those months? January · February · July · August · November · December

Hybrid black poplar: how to prune it?

  1. On young trees, remove side branches gradually for a straight trunk; take off only a few branches at a time and keep at least the top half of the tree as crown.
  2. Cut branches off just outside the branch collar, without leaving a stub.
  3. Have old trees along roads checked regularly.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • There are 2 pruning periods a year: July–August and November–February. You don’t have to prune in every one.
  • Never remove more than about a quarter of the crown at once. Better a little every year.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • Pruning in July–August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
  • Host plant: caterpillars of butterflies or moths eat the leaves.
  • Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.

Common mistakes

  • Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
  • Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.

Caution: Topping a poplar (sawing off the crown) does not make an oversized tree safer: the new shoots are weakly attached and break off easily later.
