Wintergreen barberry (Berberis julianae): when to prune it?
Prune after flowering, in June. If you want plenty of berries, prune lightly: they form on the branches that have flowered.
What else to prune in those months? June
Wintergreen barberry (Berberis julianae): how to prune it?
- Trim a hedge into shape in June, a little narrower at the top than at the base, so that the bottom also gets light.
- On a single shrub, remove a few old branches at the base every few years.
- A neglected shrub can be cut back hard; it usually reshoots from old wood, though you lose a year of flowers.
- Clear up the prunings straight away: the spines stay sharp for a long time, even in the lawn.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: June.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in June can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Wintergreen barberry (Berberis julianae) flowers in May–June, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Wear thick gloves and long sleeves: the spines are sharp and easily pierce thin fabric.
