Darwin’s barberry (Berberis darwinii): when to prune it?

Straight after flowering, from late May to mid-June. That gives the shrub the rest of the year to make new shoots that will flower next spring.

What else to prune in those months? May · June

Darwin’s barberry (Berberis darwinii): how to prune it?

  1. Cut flowered shoots back to just above a young side shoot or a leaf.
  2. Remove dead, weak and crossing stems at the base.
  3. Trim a hedge once a year, after flowering. Keep it slightly wider at the bottom than at the top so light reaches the base.
  4. Renovate an overgrown or bare shrub over two or three years: each year remove a third of the oldest stems at ground level.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: May–June.
  • Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • Pruning in May–June can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
  • Darwin’s barberry (Berberis darwinii) flowers in April–May, when it attracts bees.
  • If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
  • Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.

Common mistakes

  • Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
  • Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.

Caution: It flowers on last year’s wood: pruning in autumn or winter removes the flowers. Check for nesting birds before you prune.
