Giant bellflower: when to prune it?
After flowering, in July–August, cut the spent stems back to the leaves at the base.
Giant bellflower: how to prune it?
- Cut spent stems to just above the basal leaves; a few late flowers sometimes follow.
- Leave one or two stems if you want to collect seed or have seedlings.
- In autumn or March, clear away the last dead leaves.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July–August.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Giant bellflower flowers in June–July, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: If you let every stem set seed, expect plenty of seedlings the following year.
