Garden thyme: when to prune it?
Lightly in April, and after flowering in July–August.
Garden thyme: how to prune it?
- In April, trim the plant lightly into shape, only in the green foliage.
- After flowering, cut off the flower stems and a third of the growth, so the plant stays compact.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: April and July–August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Don’t cut back into bare, old wood: thyme struggles to regrow from it. After a few years it becomes woody; replace it then.
