Spearmint: when to prune it?
In August, after the first flowering, and in March to remove last year’s dead stems.
Spearmint: how to prune it?
- After flowering, cut all stems back to 5–10 cm above the ground.
- In March, remove the dead stems just above the new shoots.
- Cut off any runners creeping out of the pot or bed straight away.
- During the season simply pick the tips: every harvest is a small prune.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Spearmint flowers in July–September, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
