Seven-son flower: when to prune it?
From late February to late March, before the new shoots start. It flowers on new wood.
What else to prune in those months? March
Seven-son flower: how to prune it?
- Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches right down to the base.
- For a tree form, keep one or a few strong stems and remove side shoots at the base; for a shrub, keep the multi-stemmed shape.
- For a more compact plant you can shorten the longest branches by a third.
- Thin overcrowded shrubs by removing a few of the older branches right at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Seven-son flower flowers in August–October, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Do not prune after July: that costs flower buds and new shoots that can no longer ripen before winter.
