Buck’s-horn plantain: when to prune it?

From June to August, cut off the flower stalks of plants grown for the kitchen. Plants in paving joints or a wild corner need nothing.

What else to prune in those months? June · July · August

Buck’s-horn plantain: how to prune it?

  1. Cut the spikes off with their stalks at the rosette as soon as they appear.
  2. Between paving or in a wild corner, leave the spikes, so that birds can eat the seeds and the plant can self-seed.
  3. In autumn, pull out spent, dried-up plants and put them on the compost heap.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: June–August.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
