Lesser periwinkle: when to prune it?
In March, before flowering, or straight after flowering in June.
Lesser periwinkle: how to prune it?
- Every now and then, cut an old, sparse carpet down short with shears or a mower set high: it grows back denser.
- Dig out runners where they are not wanted.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and June. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Common mistakes
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
Caution: Don’t cut during flowering in April–May. Don’t give the clippings to rabbits, guinea pigs or other animals: the plant is poisonous.
