Oregon grape: when to prune it?
After flowering (May–June).
Oregon grape: how to prune it?
- Cut long, bare stems back low down; they will sprout again from the base.
- An old, leggy group can be cut right back to 20–30 cm after flowering; it will regrow densely.
- Remove dried-out or frost-damaged leaves.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: May–June.
- Grows best when left alone. Only remove dead, diseased or awkward branches.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in May–June can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Oregon grape flowers in March–May, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
- In July–August birds eat the fruit: leave some on the plant or on the ground.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Pruning too much: it grows best when left alone.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: If you cut off all the flowered stems after flowering, there will be no berries that year: leave some for the birds. Wear gloves, as the leaflets are prickly.
